Why do what is Right and Good and not do what is Wrong and Bad? Psalm 1

God’s Message to My Grandchildren

Title: Why do what is Right and Good and not do what is Wrong and Bad?

Text: Psalm 1

How well God must like you—

You don’t hang out at Sin Saloon, you don’t slink along Dead-End Road, (and) you don’t go to Smart-Mouth College.

Instead you thrill to God’s Word. You chew on Scripture day and night.

You’re a tree replanted in Eden, bearing fresh fruit every month, never dropping a leaf, always in blossom.

You’re not at all like the wicked, who are mere windblown dust— without defense in court, unfit company for innocent people.

God charts the road you take. The road they take is Skid Row.

Truth: There will always be a choice for us to choose each and every day. The choice will be for what is right and good, or for what is wrong and bad. But, God clearly loves you when you choose what pleases Him.

Application: This Psalm was written by a father (King David) to his children, and I want you as my children and grandchildren to hear this message that is found in the center of the Bible. It is a simple but very important message about how much God loves you when you do what is right and good by listening to Him.

Just as God says in this passage, I am sending a warning out to you: not all your “so-called friends” will always be offering you choices that are right and good. In fact, many times you will be tempted and tested by them to actually do what is clearly wrong and bad – and you will know it too, but you will feel pressure to join them anyway.

Who are the most important people in your life? Who do you want to please the most: Your parents or “so-called friends”? Which choice will make God happy?

What happens depends upon the choice you make. When you are choosing what is right and good, things go much better every day. As this passage says, as a result, you make better choices about where to go and not to go, what to say and not to say, and you will always feel good about what you have done each day and you do not need to hide anything or lie about anything.

But, if you choose wrong and bad ways, you will feel ashamed and find you have lost your way, and you will find you have to lie and hide what you have done and said to those you claim to love. However, you may be able to lie and hide some things you say and do from your mom and dad, but what about God? Do you think God is not able to know the truth?

It is good to have right and good friends to hang out with and I pray you will have many awesome friends in your life because they will help you to do what is right and good, just as you may help them to do the same. But, choose your friends carefully. Make sure they do not lead you down any path that you know is wrong or bad in your heart. That is God speaking to you when you understand the difference.

Whenever you are not sure, come ask your grandfather and I will help you to decide for yourself the right path to take and avoid what is called “Skid Row.”
